What Is Functional Testing and Is It Worth It? A Guide to Personalised Nutrition

Why Standard Blood Tests Don't Always Give You the Full Picture

GP blood tests are designed to rule out disease. They look for markers that fall outside a wide reference range and if your results sit within that range, you're typically told there's nothing wrong. Your GP is your first and most important port of call for any health concern and nutritional therapy works alongside medical care, never in place of it.

But there's a huge gap between 'no disease' and 'feeling your best'. Functional testing fills that gap. Rather than looking for what's broken, it looks at how well your body is actually functioning and that's a very different question. As a BANT registered nutritional therapist, I use these insights to complement your medical care with personalised nutrition and lifestyle support.

So What Exactly Is Functional Testing?

Functional testing is a range of specialised laboratory tests used to assess the underlying drivers of your symptoms. As a nutritional therapist, I use these tests to build a picture of what's happening inside your body, so that the nutrition and lifestyle plan we create together is based on evidence, not guesswork.

The most commonly used tests in my practice include:

  • Comprehensive stool analysis - to assess gut health, microbiome diversity, digestive function and markers of inflammation

  • Hormone testing - including cortisol patterns, oestrogen metabolism and thyroid markers, particularly useful for women in perimenopause or with cycle-related symptoms

  • Advanced cardiovascular panels - going beyond basic cholesterol to look at particle size and inflammation markers

  • Micronutrient testing - identifying deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, B12, magnesium and zinc

  • Nutrigenomic testing - analysing how nutrition, lifestyle and environment influence gene expression, providing insights into your unique nutritional needs to create truly personalised strategies that support energy, metabolism, recovery and long-term health

What Makes Functional Testing Different?

The key difference is context. A functional test result isn't read in isolation, it's interpreted alongside your full health history, your symptoms, your diet, your lifestyle and your goals. This is what makes personalised nutrition genuinely personalised.

For example, two people can both experience chronic fatigue. For one, the root cause might be low ferritin and poor iron absorption. For another, it might be disrupted cortisol patterns from long-term stress. Without testing, both might be given the same generic advice, eat more iron-rich foods, get more sleep. With testing, we can address what's actually driving the problem.

Is It Worth the Investment?

This is the most common question I'm asked and it's a fair one. Functional tests are an additional cost on top of nutritional therapy consultations and I always want to make sure the information we gain is genuinely useful for you.

My honest answer: not everyone needs a test. In fact, for some clients, a thorough health history and dietary assessment tells us everything we need to know to make meaningful progress. But for others, particularly those who have tried multiple approaches without success, or who have complex, overlapping symptoms, testing is genuinely transformative.

It removes the guesswork, saves time and it means every recommendation I make is grounded in your biology, not a generic template.

How to Know If Functional Testing Might Be Right for You

Testing tends to be most valuable if:

  • You have ongoing symptoms that haven't been explained by standard testing

  • You've tried dietary changes before but haven't seen the results you expected

  • You're dealing with multiple symptoms that feel connected but no one has joined the dots

  • You want a truly personalised approach rather than general healthy eating advice

  • You have a specific diagnosed condition and want to understand the nutritional drivers
